A large backlit LCD offers easy to read channel numbers and descriptions.

A self-standing battery charger comes with the radio.  The charger accepts a variety of DC power sources*, or use the included AC adapter. *Optimal charging cable required. “TAG” scanning offers easy one touch channel selection and deselect ion. The FCC has set aside these frequencies for individual and group communications.

\“Call ring function” is used to send a ring tone to another radio – like making a phone ring.  Ten different ring patterns can be selected, used to identify different members in a group.38 different group codes are available.  Using these groups permits more people to use the same channels without having all of the radios hear all the conversations.  “Smart-Ring” function is used in GROUP MODE operation to check for available stations, in a specified group, within range.  When other radios are in range, the transceiver alerts audibly.

Automatic transponder function automatically checks for another Icom radio listening in its range.  The LCD displays an icon of the radio and alerts you of its presence.

By 1999 all SOLAS convention ships operating internationally must comply with the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) carriage requirements.  These include specifications for survival craft handheld radios, requiring a minimum of two sets of such radios to be carried on cargo vessels of 300 to 500 GT; and a minimum of 3 sets to be carried on cargo vessels over 500 GT, as well as all passenger ships.
