Since 1st
February 1999, marine radio communication has undergone fundamental
change. Ships and an increasing number of coastguards and coast stations
are ceasing to monitor traditional distress frequencies including
channel 16. Under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS),
a fully automatic system has become operational. At the touch of a
button a distress message with an accurate GPS position can be sent
using Digital Selective Calling (DSC).
Everyday radio operation has also been improved. Watch keeping on
channel 16 will be consigned to history. If the shore or another vessel
needs to communicate with you for any reason, an alarm will sound. You
will no longer need to listen for voice calls.
The VHF3 is designed to be used with the DSC3
controller.
